Privacy policy

Entzun reads an ebook and its audiobook in step, word by word, and it does that on the device it is installed on. This policy is short because there is little to explain.

What Entzun collects about you

Nothing.

There are no accounts and no sign-in. There is no analytics, no advertising, no crash reporting service and no third-party software development kit of any kind. Entzun does not ask for, and does not read, your contacts, your photos, your location, your calendar or your health data. It never records through the microphone.

What stays on your device

When you add a book, Entzun copies the ebook and the audiobook you picked into its own storage and keeps what it works out about them beside them: the text extracted from the ebook, the transcript of the narration, the word-by-word alignment between the two, the cover picture, your place in the book, and how you like a page set. All of it stays in the app's own folder on the device.

Entzun reads the files you choose in the document picker and nothing else. Once a book has been copied in, it offers to delete the originals you picked so that an audiobook is not stored twice. It does that only when you ask, and it never touches a file you did not name.

Transcription

To mark the word being spoken, Entzun has to know when each word is said. It gets that from the speech recogniser built into iOS and macOS, working on the audio file on your device. The recording is not uploaded and neither is the transcript.

The first time a language is transcribed, the system may download that language's speech model from Apple. That request asks for a model; it carries nothing of your book, your audio or your reading. Apple's own privacy policy covers it.

The network

Apart from that model and iCloud, below, Entzun does not use the network. There is no server behind it, it looks nothing up online, and it sends nothing to the developer or to anybody else. Books are not identified to anybody, and no sync data is fetched for them: both files come from you.

iCloud

So that a book you add on one of your devices is on the others, Entzun keeps your library in the iCloud storage of your Apple Account: the ebook and audiobook files, the text and transcript and alignment worked out from them, the cover, and your place in each book on each device. That is the private database of your own account. Apple stores it, Apple's terms and privacy policy cover it, it counts against your iCloud storage, and the developer has no way to read it.

It happens only on a device signed in to iCloud with iCloud Drive turned on for Entzun. Sign out, or switch Entzun off in the iCloud settings, and the app keeps working on that device alone with what it has. Deleting a book removes it from iCloud as well as from the device.

Diagnostics

About has a “Copy diagnostics” action. It puts a short report on the pasteboard so you can paste it into a message if you want help with a sync that came out wrong. Nothing is sent anywhere on its own.

The report holds the app version, the system version, the kind of device, how many books are in the library, and for each book the figures its sync produced. It holds no file names, no folder paths and no device name. It does not hold your books' titles unless you switch “Include book titles” on first.

Writing for support

If you write to support@entzun.ink, your message and your address are used to answer you and for nothing else. They pass through the provider that carries the mail. They are not added to a mailing list, and the correspondence is deleted once it is finished with.

Purchase

Entzun is sold through the App Store. Apple handles the purchase and tells the developer nothing about you beyond the anonymous sales figures every developer sees. Apple's privacy policy covers that transaction.

This website

entzun.ink is a set of static pages served by GitHub Pages. It sets no cookies, runs no analytics and loads nothing from anybody else's servers: the typefaces and pictures come from this site. GitHub, which hosts it, keeps the ordinary server logs a web host keeps, under GitHub's privacy statement.

Your rights

Because nothing about you is held anywhere but on your own devices and in your own iCloud account, there is nothing held about you to ask for, to correct, or to have erased. Deleting a book removes its files and everything derived from them, from iCloud too. Deleting the app removes all of it from that device, including the copies of your books; what is in iCloud stays until you delete it from the app on another device or from your iCloud storage settings.

If you have written to support and want that correspondence deleted, ask at the same address.

Children

Entzun is not directed at children, and it collects nothing from anybody of any age.

Changes

A new version of this policy is published here and in the app, with a new effective date. Anything that would change what leaves your device will be said plainly, and where it is a choice it will be a choice.
